Food & Drinks that Should Be Limited

When sticky bits of candy cling to teeth, the sugar can do serious damage to enamel. Licorice, gummy worms, and Skittles are examples of candy that should be highly moderated. And if they are consumed, teeth should be brushed soon thereafter.
Canned fruits can also be a problem. Unlike fresh fruits, canned fruits are often soaked in sugar-filled syrup, which poses problems for enamel. There are even certain fresh fruits, such as oranges, that are high enough in acid content that they should only be enjoyed in moderation.
Starchy foods can be problematic as well because they can convert to sugar while stuck in teeth. Consequently, there’s a heightened cavity risk. Bread, cereal, and pasta are examples of high-starch foods that shouldn’t be overconsumed. Again, it’s not that these foods need to be avoided altogether, but that their intake should be monitored.
There are also certain beverages that can significantly increase the risk of your child developing cavities. Soft drinks are best kept to an absolute minimum. They’re extremely high in sugar content, and are also highly acidic. Dark sodas are especially bad because they can also stain teeth. You’ll also want to check the label on sports drinks. Some sports drinks are very high in sugar and should generally be avoided. Also, some fruit juices should be moderated because of high sugar and acidity.
