As soon as your baby’s first tooth emerges, you’ll want to start brushing it. And it’s important that your baby has their first dentist visit by age one. When your baby is ready for their first appointment, it’s best to choose a pediatric dentist who specializes in baby teeth. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, we offer particular expertise in ensuring that baby teeth stay as healthy as possible. While regular brushing and dental visits will go a long way toward keeping your baby’s teeth healthy, there are other ways to prevent decay that should be kept in mind on a day-to-day basis.
Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay in Babies
During the first year of your child’s life, it’s good practice to use a clean baby washcloth to gently wipe down the gums. When that first tooth arrives, which often happens at about six months, it should be brushed with a soft baby toothbrush and a small dab of fluoride toothpaste that is about the size of a grain of rice. Between the ages of one and three, brushing should be done two times per day for two minutes. The amount of toothpaste used should not increase until after the third birthday.
You can also prevent tooth decay in baby teeth by closely monitoring what your child is eating and drinking. Foods that are sticky and sugary are most likely to cause tooth decay and should generally be avoided. When they are consumed, brushing should soon follow. Because juice is acidic and highly sugary, it should be strongly limited. Babies under six months should not consume any juice at all, while babies between six and twelve months should be limited to four ounces per day of juice that is half diluted with water.
Also, if your child uses a bottle or sippy cup for extended periods of time, it should be filled with water only. And you don’t want to ever put your baby to bed with a bottle, which could not only expose them to sugars, but can also pose a choking hazard.
