When that first tooth arrives, it’s time to start brushing. But it’s much further down the road that your child will start brushing their teeth without assistance. It’s usually at about six-years-old that a child truly becomes capable of handling brushing duties in a way that will keep their teeth healthy. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, we are more than happy to help your child with developing good brushing habits. Successful brushing and flossing, along with semi-annual checkups, will help to ensure that cavities don’t form and teeth remain pearly white.
Tips for Teaching Your Child Proper Brushing Habits
It all begins with selecting the right toothpaste. There are toothpastes geared toward children that have colorful packaging and exciting flavors. It’s a good thing that these marketing tactics make your child more interested in brushing their teeth, but you’ll still want to pay attention to the quality of the actual product. You’ll want to choose toothpaste that contains fluoride and features the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance.
As you assist your child with proper brushing procedure, you’ll want to make sure they’re not overloading their toothbrush. Kids aged three-and-up only need a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for each session. Brushing sessions should occur in the morning after breakfast and in the evening after dinner. Teeth should be brushed for two minutes, with particular focus on gums and molars. Some parents have their kids brush after lunch as well. This is okay, but you want to make sure that your child isn’t brushing their teeth so often that they’re wearing down their enamel.
As your child develops their regular brushing routine, it’s important that they regularly change up their starting point. This will help to ensure that they don’t unwittingly miss certain spots in their mouth on a day-to-day basis. Also, children generally need their toothbrushes to be replaced every three to four months. As bristles wear down, they become less effective at scrubbing, so it’s important to change brushes as necessary. After each brushing session, the toothbrush should be rinsed off to help prevent bacteria from accumulating on it.
