Baby teeth usually first appear at six months or so. Upon their arrival, they need to be taken care of on a daily basis. With regular brushing and dental visits, you’ll help to ensure that your baby’s teeth remain healthy and don’t cause any discomfort. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, our local chidrens’ dentists provide expertise with caring for baby teeth in the greater Gilbert, AZ area. We’ll help to establish healthy dental habits from a very early age, which makes it more likely that your child’s teeth will remain in excellent condition as they grow older.
Simple Ways to Keep Baby Teeth Healthy
It’s important to keep your baby’s teeth and gums clean. Your approach to cleaning them will shift somewhat as your baby ages. During the first year, your baby’s gums should be regularly wiped down with a baby-specific washcloth. And when teeth arrive, they should be brushed twice per day for two minutes. For brushing, use a soft-bristled baby toothbrush with a dab of fluoride toothpaste that is about the size of a rice grain. When your child turns three, this should be increased to a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
To prevent decay in baby teeth, it’s also important to maintain healthy eating and drinking habits. In particular, it’s best to avoid/minimize products that are high in added sugar, which are notorious for causing tooth decay. While a lot of parents like to give juice to their babies, it’s best not to do this before six months of age. After six months, it’s important that this is done in moderation. Juice is high in sugar and acidity, and can cause tooth decay rather easily. If you’re going to give juice to your baby, it’s a good idea to half-dilute it with water. Babies between six and twelve months should consume no more than four ounces of juice in a day.
