Strong brushing/flossing habits and regular dental check-ups will go a long way toward preventing decay in your child’s teeth. There are also some dietary precautions you can take to help minimize the risk of cavities/decay. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, our local children’s dentist office can help you with establishing a routine that will keep your kiddo’s chompers healthy and pearly white. Here are some simple tips for preventing decay in childrens’ teeth.
Start Brushing/Flossing Early
When your child gets their first tooth, you should start brushing it two times a day. Even itsy-bitsy baby teeth can suffer decay. When teeth first appear, they should be brushed with a rice grain-sized bit of toothpaste. At age three, this can be increased to a pea-sized amount. Flossing should start early as well. By your child’s second birthday, their teeth should be flossed daily so that decay-causing particles are removed.
Dietary Discretio
You can also reduce the risk of decay/cavities by closely monitoring your child’s consumption of sugary foods and drinks. In particular, chewy candy often causes tooth decay because it sticks in tooth crevices and escapes the toothbrush. Soda pop is also notorious for causing tooth decay, and should be kept to a minimum. Fruit juices, as well, are very high in sugar and you should make sure your child isn’t gorging on them. The occasional sugary treat is just fine, but the key word is occasional.
nGet Sufficient Fluorid
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that makes tooth enamel stronger. By getting enough fluoride, your child will have better protection against acid and plaque bacteria that could cause decay in teeth. Gilbert, AZ has fluoridated water, which helps. Also, if necessary, your child can get fluoride treatments at our office.
