As soon as a baby gets their first tooth, it’s time to start brushing it. While you’ll handle your child’s brushing for the first few years, you’ll want to start directing them to do more of the work once they reach age five or six. Of course, you’ll have to pay close attention to make sure that the brushing is being done effectively. But with strong brushing habits and regular dental check-ups, your child’s teeth and gums are far more likely to remain healthy throughout their childhood. And for dental care, it’s best to visit an office that offers particular expertise in pediatric dentistry. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, we specialize in children’s dentistry in the greater Gilbert, AZ area.
Tips for Helping Your Child Develop Successful Brushing Habits
It’s important to first select a fluoride toothpaste that has the Seal of Acceptance from the American Dental Association. To appeal to children, some toothpastes are cartoonishly packaged. However, you’ll want to pay more attention to the quality of the product than the colorfulness of the packaging.
It’s also important that your child is using the right amount of toothpaste. When an excessive amount is used, there’s a chance that fluorosis could develop. While fluorosis is typically only a minor cosmetic concern, it’s still preferable to avoid it. And, of course, if your child uses too little toothpaste, then there’s a better chance that their teeth won’t be thoroughly cleaned. While infants’ teeth should only be brushed with water, between ages two and three, your child should brush with a rice grain-sized quantity of toothpaste. After their third birthday, this should be increased to a pea-sized amount. Your child should brush for two minutes. Brushing should be completed after breakfast and before bed, with flossing being done once each day.
By about age seven, you may be able to entrust your child with brushing more independently. Just make sure your child is alternating their starting point, which will help to ensure that all teeth are getting brushed, at least to some degree. When your child finishes brushing, it’s important that they rinse off the brush to help prevent the buildup of bacteria on its bristles.
