For your child’s teeth to remain in strong health, it’s important that they are getting sufficient fluoride, which helps to build enamel and keep teeth protected against infections and decay. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste is an important part of optimizing your child’s dental health. There are also certain foods—such as grapes and potatoes—that contain a significant amount of this naturally occurring mineral. If your child isn’t getting quite enough fluoride during their daily routine, then you could look into fluoride treatments. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, we provide fluoride treatments for kids in the greater Gilbert, AZ area. We’d be happy to answer any of your questions about fluoride and whether such treatments would be recommendable for your child’s situation. Here are some of the FAQs about fluoride for children.
Should babies get fluoride supplements before their teeth arrive? Should I worry about fluorosis?
Fluoride supplements aren’t needed until teeth actually emerge. And it’s worth keeping in mind that baby teeth are susceptible to fluorosis, which can cause faint white streaks on the teeth. Typically, fluorosis causes no pain and doesn’t affect tooth function. If you use fluoridated water to make baby formula, it could increase the risk of fluorosis. But again, fluorosis rarely causes any concerning symptoms. And there is no risk of fluorosis once your child gets their adult teeth.
Is fluoridated water safe for children?
The American Dental Association says that fluoridated water is safe for kids. In our community of Gilbert, AZ, public water is in line with the ADA’s recommendations at about 0.7 mg/L. Fluoridated water can reduce the risk of tooth decay by 25%.
What age should my child start brushing with fluoride toothpaste?
As soon as your child gets their first tooth, you should brush it twice daily with about a rice grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. At age three, this can be increased to a pea-sized amount.
