Sugary and highly acidic foods/drinks can cause enamel to deteriorate, enabling cavities to form. While you don’t have to completely deprive your child of sweet treats, it’s important that consumption is very moderated. At Parkland Pediatric Dental, we’d be happy to discuss with you ways to establish a diet that helps to keep your child’s teeth healthy. Here are three kinds of food and drink that commonly give children dental problems.
Chewy Candy
All candy consumption should be moderated, but chewy candy is particularly likely to cause dental issues. This is because it isn’t just sugary, but also easily sticks to crevices in teeth. And because children don’t always have the most successful brushing techniques, the remnants of the candy can linger for a long time, which can lead to tooth decay. Common candies that lead to cavities include gummy worms, Skittles, and Starburst. If your child loves these kinds of candy, you’ll want to reserve them as occasional treats, and then make sure they thoroughly brush their teeth later that day.
Sugary Drinks
Soda pop is not only sugary, but also highly acidic. But soda pop isn’t the only sugary drink that can be problematic. Sports drinks and fruit juices are also very high in sugar and shouldn’t be consumed excessively. While these drinks do purport health benefits, it’s important to check their nutritional info so you know just how much sugar your child is taking in.
Starchy Foods
Because starchy foods can convert to sugar while stuck in teeth, they can also heighten the risk of cavities. For optimal dental health, you’ll want to make sure your child isn’t eating too much pasta, bread, or cereal. It’s completely fine to serve your child starchy foods in moderation, but you should be sure they’re also getting plenty of tooth-friendly foods in their diet such as leafy vegetables, eggs, and nuts.
